The Blood Center of Central Iowa Blood Drive

The Blood Center of Iowa and Mercy Medical Center - New Hampton are "Partners in Saving Lives". The Blood Center is the sole provider of all blood and blood products to Mercy Medical Center and the New Hampton community. With this new partnership, The Blood Center of Central Iowa has now become the largest blood and blood product provider in the State of Iowa. Currently, The Blood Center provides blood and blood products to 46 hospitals in 42 counties in Iowa.

The Blood Center of Iowa logoThis partnership with The Blood Center of Iowa replaced the affiliation Mercy Medical Center - New Hampton had with the American Red Cross. The Blood Center's focus is to provide blood to local community hospitals in Iowa, whereas the American Red Cross provides blood to hospitals across the United States and internationally. With this focus in mind, there will be a larger supply of blood on hand at Mercy Medical Center and quicker access to blood or blood products in an emergency situation. The Blood Center of Iowa strives to make blood drives more personal, provide recognition to donors, and create partnerships with local businesses, civic organizations, churches, schools, and communities to help maintain an adequate blood supply in central and north Iowa.

In addition to the different initiatives held by The Blood Center and the American Red Cross, Mercy's decision was cost based. By contracting with The Blood Center of Central Iowa, Mercy Medical Center estimates they have averted a $40,000 increase in the annual cost of blood and blood products. The Blood Center of Iowa is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Des Moines. Over 65% of the blood collected through The Blood Center comes from mobile blood drives held throughout Iowa. The remaining collections come from five permanent blood collection sites, which are located in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Mason City, Waterloo and Marshalltown.

The Blood Center focuses its mobile collections in communities and counties where it serves the local hospital, thus proving its community focus. Giving blood is quick, painless, and saves lives. The Blood Center holds blood drive in New Hampton six times a year. "We hope the community will support us in this change by continuing to donate blood at hospital sponsored drives," Martin-Shaw said. Please donate blood and help maintain a stable blood supply in our community.

To find out the date and time of the next drive call Francie Crawford at 641.394.1630.
