Mercy Medical Center – New Hampton's New Ultrasound System offers Enhanced Diagnostic Patient Information

Mercy Medical Center – New Hampton recently acquired the ultra-premium ACUSON Sequoia™ C512 ultrasound system from Siemens Medical Solutions. The ACUSON Sequoia™ ultrasound system represents the most advanced technology in ultrasound imaging. Each unique feature and innovation is designed to help physicians make more confident and accurate diagnoses, deliver excellent image quality and enhance workflow, across a broad range of patient types and applications.

Ultrasound imaging is a method of obtaining images from inside the human body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. The reflected echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs, including but not limited to Abdominal (liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, bladder), Small Parts, Breast, Vascular (venous and arterial) and Obstetrical/GYN. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs and enable physicians to see blood flow and fetal heart functions. Ultrasound imaging can also help a physician determine the source of pain, swelling or infection in many parts of the body. Millions of expectant parents have seen the first "picture" of their unborn child with an ultrasound examination of the uterus and fetus.

“The advanced technologies significantly enhance the image quality and information content for an improved level of imaging performance during exams, which translates into better and more confident diagnoses for all of our patients,” stated Aaron Flugum, Diagnostic Imaging Services Manager.

In addition to the new ultrasound equipment, the fourSight TEE View software was purchased. This feature allows for 3-D imaging, enhanced zoom, pan and rotate functions. It also has the ability to analyze and interrogate anatomy from unlimited perspectives.

Expectant parents can enjoy seeing 3-D images of their unborn child with the fourSight TEE View software. The Sequoia system’s onboard CD/DVD drive allows image data to be stored on a single disc so after an obstetric ultrasound, parents will receive the photos and video footage of their child to share with family and friends.

The new ultrasound equipment was purchased through the Images of Wellness Campaign. Thank you to the generous donors who made this technological advancement possible. Over $250,000 is still needed to assist in purchasing new mammography equipment with computer aided detection, computed radiography, radiology information system and the picture archiving and communications system. The radiology equipment is a needed component to implement an electronic health record, which will go live on September 5, 2008. The electronic health record project for Mercy Medical Center – New Hampton will cost $875,000. For information on how you can contribute to the Images of Wellness Campaign, please call 641-394-1626.

With Mercy Medical Center – New Hampton having the latest technology available for ultrasound imaging, all patients can request to have their tests performed there. Whether patients are being seen by a specialist in Rochester, Mason City or Waterloo, they can always return to New Hampton to have tests performed. Patients many times just have to speak up and ask if they can return to the comfort and convenience of their community hospital for tests. The Sonographers that perform the tests in New Hampton are from Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa, and are registered in each specialty being offered – Abdomen, Obstetric/GYN, Vascular, Breast and Small parts. A Radiologist reviews all ultrasounds and the results are given to the patient’s physician that ordered the test.
